I rushed to the Marta station and barely got on to the train at the Art Center on time to go to work. It was very crowded, but I managed to get a seat next to Martin Luther King Jr. At first I couldn't believe my eyes but it was really him. I had to ask to make sure "Excuse me, sir. Are you Martin Luther king?". "Yes", he replied. I'm always curious, so I ask "How did you come up with your famous "I have a dream" speech?" He says" I improvised on the spot, I didn't know what I was going to say exactly. But I knew if I spoke from the heart, it would be more impactful." I was amazed to know that such a powerful speech wasn't wasn't practiced and rehearsed. He said "I am always coming from the heart. When you are genuine, everyone can see it, everyone can feel it, and everyone can know it. It doesn't have to be polished. It doesn't have to be scripted. Because the power of the spoken word truly does come from who you are and what you are. More than what you are saying." I thought about this. Because of my own, interest in public speaking and hoping to sway opinions and to inspire people to be better versions of themselves. I had always thought the opposite. It needs to be practiced, it needs to be rehearsed. But without the connection there. It's always going to fall flat. Because he has inspired so much change in the country for the better and this was the most famous example.I took this wisdom from the Doctor Martin Luther King. I asked him one last question, "I will be giving a speech on forgiveness. How do you think I should present forgiveness in my speech? He said with a smile," darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that. As long as you know this. The words will flow out of your heart." I thanked him and and then got off at my stop feeling inspired for the future.
